Elements of a Backroad

Focus.

Eyes squinted. Sun blinding. Broken sunglasses. No sunglasses. Visor down. Dirt Drive. Gravel. Roads. Deep ditches. Open areas. Grassy acres. Dark tree lines. Corn or soy fields. Bright lights flicker. Towns far off. Trash is thrown from cars. Litter lining the edges of the ditches. Dull red barns. Stray buildings. Abandoned structures slowly fall in on themselves. Nice homes. Car graveyards surrounding rundown houses. Farm animals. The smell of manure wafts through the vehicle. Driving fast. Hurrying towards the crossroad. Stop signs. Slow clicking of the green flashing arrow. Lonely miles. Head bobbing. Eyes falling. Shaking awake. Best time of your life. Music turned up high. The window rolled down. Hair blowing around. Thump. Potholes. Back wheels spinning up dirt and rock. Click. Clack. Dust rolling. Clouds forming. Mud on the tires. Bump. Creak. Swerve around. Road narrows. Driving down the middle. Have to pull over, slow down, and hope they do the same as another car passes by. No lines. No sides. Just open roads.
